Associate Professor Leon Lai
MBBS, PhD, FRACS, Special Area of Interest: Cerebrovascular neurosurgery including brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformation and surgery for stroke

A/Prof Leon Lai completed his medical degree from the University of Melbourne in 2004.  His postgraduate specialty training in Neurosurgery was undertaken in both Melbourne and Sydney and he was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is now a consultant neurosurgeon based at Monash Health and the Jessie Macpherson Private Hospital.   A/Prof Lai specialises in the surgical treatment of aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and other vascular disorders of the brain and spinal cord and works as part of the multidisciplinary Neurovascular Surgery service at Monash Health.

A/Prof Lai undertook additional subspecialty training and research in neurovascular surgery.  He was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) for his work that focused on the surgical management and innovations in the treatment of brain aneurysms. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters on neurovascular surgery; he lectures at Monash University, and presents at local, national and international scientific meetings.

A/Prof Lai is a member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia, AANS/CNS Cerebrovascular Section and the American Heart and Stroke Associations. His subspecialty interests include the treatment of brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, dural fistulas, cavernomas and surgery for stroke. He also has an interest in brain tumours, spinal surgery and skull base surgery.  

He co-founded the Monash Neurovascular Institute  a comprehensive care model where patients can access unbiased multidisciplinary expertise – for both open and endovascular neurosurgery - in one practice, throughout their clinical management.  

A/Prof Lai also speaks fluent Vietnamese, Mandarin and Cantonese and is available for consultations at Medical Specialists on Collins on alternate Thursday mornings.
